Artemis Fowl
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
I first read this book in 2001. Back then, I remember that I enjoyed it tremendously. I still enjoy, and I think I've read this book at least a half dozen times. It full of flair, wit and laugh-out loud humour.
The story follows the path of 12 year old anti-hero Artemis Fowl. He's a genius, with the highest recorded IQ in Europe, and he's Irish. He's also a criminal mastermind. After the Fowl's family fortunes were lost in a disasterous Cola affair, and his father gone missing, young Arty, with the help of his trusty Butler, Butler (Butler is his name) he has cooked up this ingenius plan to exploit the fairy world, and hold them for Ransom.
In come the fairies. These guys aren't your run-of-the-mill type fairies. These guys are armed. And very dangerous. They are equipped with state of the art lazer weapons, bio-destroying products and they have mechanical wings. How could Artemis fare against all of that?
The thing is, you must not underestimate Artemis. He kidnaps this fairy, LEPrecon captain Holly Short - and then the whole fairy world is out to get him.
This is one of my favourite books of all time. There's action, and you simply cannot put it down. The descriptions are phenominal. Even now, it's one of the only books that my brother has read from start to end, and getting him to read is quite a feat. It compares easily to Harry Potter, yet, even with all the fantastic happenings, this book is completely believable.
My rating? 5 stars.
