Devdas
I
watched this movie, and was stumbling around the house in shock/awe/amazement
for the rest of the day. I was dazed. I felt like I had taken a litre of undiluted
red cordial. Why? Because never before have I seen such a colourful, musical,
sensual piece of art. That is what I will call it, Art - because it almost
cannot be described as a film.
This is my first introduction to a truly Bollywood movie. It stars the A-List of Bollywood artists - Shahrukh Khan (Devdas), Madhuri Dixit (Chandramukhi) and Aishwarya Rai (Parvati/Paro).
Since childhood, Devdas and Paro were destined to be together. When he was old enough, his father sent Devdas to England so he could become a laywer. During that time, Paro (Parvati) keeps alight her lamp, a symbol of her love, and it never stops burning, for 10 whole years.
So Dev returns after a decade or so, and once again is immeadiatly stricken with his dear Paro again, however his status and her status do not allow themselves to be married, and their love starts to spiral like a tragic Romeo and Juiliet. One thing leads to a next, and we find Devdas in a brothel, where he meets the stunning Chandramukhi, who promptly falls in love with him.
As the movie progresses, I am not quite sure how the storyline developed to become so different. It's amazing what can happen in three hours or so.
It is colourful, vibrant. I had the chime of dancing bells and rhythmic drumming stuck in my ears for hours after. The dance sequences are amazing. One of my only qualms is the length of the movie, and the dubbed singer for Madhuri Dixit.
I am definately going to keep on watching Bollywood movies. If they are all this good, then I am in for some hours of viewing - after all, the industry does make over 200 movies a year.
