Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

If there ever was a thinking movie, this one would be it. It's genre spreads over many: Drama, romance, sci-fi and comedy. You would think, because it's main character is Jim Carrey, that this would be a very comical movie: but let me warn you, it isn't. Carrey is in a much darker role than his previous, and he plays the character well. Kate Winslet plays his quirky love Clementine, and she plays her character very convincingly. Overall, the cast, including a strong supporting cast of Elijah Wood (LOTR), Mark Ruffalo and Kirsten Dunst, gives a very strong performance and are joys to watch on screen.

Carrey and Winslet's characters both undergo a procedure that is assured to erase eachother from their minds after their romance turns sour. However, by losing all the pain, they are left with the raw feelings and magic of what they had to begin with. It follows Joel (Carrey) as he tries to fight the procedure, and treasure the memories that he dearly wants to keep.

The movie is intriguing, and causes you to think. If your looking for a light-hearted comedy, this isn't it. There's magic in its simplicity, the soundtrack is superb. My only qualm with it is that in some cases it seems very plodding, and sometimes distracts from the main storyline.

A very interesting watch.
