Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Directed by : Hayao Miyazaki

Castle in the Sky was made before I was born - two years (1986). However, just because a movie is old, doesn't mean that its animation is bad, or the graphics have gone haywire. I love Castle in the Sky - more than any other anime movie that I have ever seen. I think the first thing I fell in love with was the soundtrack - the music (by Joe Hisaishi) is absolutely stunning, and just makes my eyes glaze over.

The storyline is so innocent and sweet. One of the first things you see, is an image of her falling out of the sky, to the tunes of the beautiful music. She is caught by Pazu, an extremely funny boy, and things progress further from there.

OK, the DVD that was presented to me has the pleasure of a Japanese and English audio track. The English version has a more extensive soundtrack, the Americans being afraid to publish a movie with over 8 minutes of silence. There is something magical about having the original audio, even without the extra beautiful music. However, if you do have the English version, you will be happy to know that it's voiced wonderfully by James van der Beek (Pazu) and Anna Paquin (Sheeta).

I was left speachless by this movie. It's touching, its funny... it's quality. I'm now officially a Hayao Miyazaki fan - I also love Joe Hisaishi now... I got to go watch Princess Monoke... (getting sidetracked)

Rating: 5/5 (so beautiful...)
